Dr Tony Kuo MBChB FRACS (OHNS) is a highly trained fully qualified senior Ear Nose and Throat, Head and Neck Surgeon servicing the Northern Sydney, Gosford and the Central Coast community of New South Wales. He is a Conjoint Lecturer of Newcastle Medical School and Macquarie University Medical School. Dr Kuo received education in New Zealand and graduated from the University of Otago, School of Medicine, Dunedin, NZ in 1999. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2009.
Following this he spent two years in post graduate fellowship positions. He was awarded two year scholarship in one of the largest Head and Neck Centers in the world, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan. The first year was spent at the Department of Otolaryngology/ Head and Neck Surgery trained by Professor Chun-Da Liao specializing in the treatment of head and neck cancers. The second year was spent at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery trained by Professor Fu-Chan Wei, a world renowned specialist in head and neck plastic and reconstructive surgery. He gained skills in reconstruction of complex defects of the face, jaw, tongue, throat and neck following cancer surgery or trauma. Tony is the first Australasian trained surgeon to be accepted and trained by Professor Wei and a rare surgeon to receive postgraduate fellowship training in two surgical specialties, Otolaryngology and Plastic Reconstructive Surgery. The double fellowship was completed in 2011.
Dr Kuo has gained a large experience in head and neck surgery, cancer excision and reconstruction of complex head and neck defects during and after his training.Tony has an interest in academic medicine and has published numerous medical research papers in addition to authorship in Head and Neck textbook. He was involved in the basic science research in composite tissue allotransplantation for future development of facial transplantation at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital.
Dr Kuo is the first surgeon to have successfully performed microvascular free tissue transfer to reconstruct facial defect after cancer excision at the Central Coast. Tony performed the first Professor Wei perforator free flap in head and neck reconstruction at John-Hunter Hospital in repairing major oral and facial defect following cancer excision in 2012. This allowed cancer patients to restore their function such as eating and swallowing as well as restoring their cosmesis.
Dr Kuo has a large practice in adult and children’s general ear nose and throat problems including grommet insertion, adenotonsillectomy, septoplasty, sinus surgery etc. Push here to view publications
Dr Kuo is accredited and operates at Macquarie University Hospital, Sydney Adventist Hospital, Chatswood Private Hospital, Gosford Private Hospital and the Central Coast Health (Gosford Hospital). Tony consults at Macquarie University Clinic, Chatswood, and Erina at the Central Coast.
